Bye-Bye Buzz: Smart Ways to Handle Yellow Jackets in Your Yard

Being outside in nature can be ruined when it’s crowded by yellow jackets. They can give a painful sting, they are easily agitated and only little action usually bothers them. Whether you’re hosting a barbecue or tending the garden, it helps to know how to get rid of yellow jackets quickly and safely.

You should first find out the hiding places of these pests and what you can do to get rid of them.

The First Thing You Should Do Is Spot The Nest

You won’t be able to remove yellow jackets unless you first find out their nest location. They usually build their nests in hidden areas like:

  • Caves or tunnels made by rodents
  • Covered places such as the attic and wall cavities
  • Use tree trunks, shrubs or sheds

Notice high wasp activity, mainly in the early morning or before it gets dark, since they are calmer but still moving around. The presence of yellow jackets flying in and out of a tiny hole in the ground probably means there is a nest nearby.

Stay away from the nest when it is bright outside. It is at this point that they become much bolder and more apt to sting you.

Remove Yellow Jackets in a Safe Way

When you find where the nest is, you can select the right way to remove it.

●         Homemade solutions

Mix dish soap with water and put this solution into the hole or opening of a small or handy nest at dusk or dawn. The body is covered by the soap which prevents them from breathing.

●         Things Such as Traps and Insecticides

Set up tailored traps for wasps close to trash bins or outside tables. Wasp-focused insecticide dust or sprays are another possible solution, just be sure to follow all of the safety instructions in the instructions.

●         Get Help from People with Experience

If either the nest is massive or placed somewhere out of your reach (for example inside walls or close to the home), keep your distance. Specialists in pest control use the right methods and materials to handle infestations while you are not at risk.

Do What You Can to Keep Yellow Jackets Away

As soon as the problem is dealt with, your priority should be prevention. These are some ways to prevent your family members from moving back in:

  • Dispose of food and drinks when you come inside. Wipe off the picnic tables and keep pet food from attracting insects by sealing it.
  • It’s good to use bins with close-fitting lids and wash them after using them.
  • Cover cracks in walls, windows and foundation to prevent water from getting inside.
  • Make them stay away: Grow citronella, spearmint or lemongrass nearby your porch or patio.
  • In the early spring months, regularly scan the area to notice if any early phase of nesting starts.

Experience Your Space Without Excess Pain

Yellow jackets are a real concern for all; in particular, they can be risky for anyone with bee allergies. Follow some specific steps and your lawn will be back to normal.

Keep your eye out, act fast and know what to do and you’ll be able to manage encounters with these uninvited visitors.
